|Surface Trawl Cruise|
The 2012 surface trawl cruises took place August 3 – September 28 in which the F/V Bristol Explorer was chartered. Three legs of approximately 3 weeks in length were scheduled where scientific crew sampled the southern Chukchi, norther Chukchi, and northern Bering Sea regions respectively. Shown in the map below, surface trawl events were placed at 30nm and 15 nm grid locations over sampling area. Oceanography and zooplankton sampling was conducted at the 15nm stations. At the 30nm stations however, oceanography, zooplankton and near surface trawls were conducted. Targeted midwater trawls were conducted in situ when acoustic signals suggested large amounts of biomass in the water column.
|Bottom Trawl Cruise|
The 2012 bottom trawl cruises took place August 9 – September 24 in which the F/V Arctic Knight was chartered. Two legs of approximately 3 weeks in length were scheduled where scientific crew sampled the northern Chukchi and southern Chukchi in sequence. Shown in the map below, bottom trawl events were placed at 30nm grid locations over sampling area matching the surface trawl locations. At these stations, 83-112 Eastern bottom trawl was deployed while at select locations the 3 meter plumb-staff beam trawl was also deployed for later gear catch comparisons to test net selectivity assumptions. An oceanographic CTD instrument was also attached to the head rope of the 83-112 to ascertain physical water characteristics.
