Gay Sheffield brings free large ship tracking to Nome

Real-time information about ship movements near Nome is now available to the public online and free of charge. The Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, University of Alaska Fairbanks Northwest Campus and University of the Aegean in Greece recently collaborated to install an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiving station in Nome. Juneau hatchery funds new endowment for student research

Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc. (DIPAC), which operates the Macaulay Hatchery, recently gave the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences $175,000 to support an endowment for graduate students at the SFOS Lena Point facility in Juneau. The fellowship will honor and memorialize DIPAC founder Ladd Macaulay, who was passionate about using the resources of DIPAC to support research.

Former professor Raymond Highsmith passes away

Raymond C. Highsmith, marine scientist and former University of Alaska Fairbanks professor, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his home in Oxford, Miss. He was 72. The cause was cancer. Continue reading
